My Students
I work with special education and general education preschoolers. I work with these students individually, in small groups and during whole group lessons with their classroom teachers.
My students have various speech and language disabilities that impact their ability to communicate.
Some of my students are completely nonverbal and rely on pointing/gesturing and crying to tell me their wants and needs. As you can imagine this can be extremely frustrating for these little learners; it also makes it difficult for them to participate during the school day. This year I have many students with sensory needs who require individual materials for safety (because of Covid).
My students range from age 2-4. I work with a team to best support their education. I believe in learning through play, especially with these young learners. Not only do my students love to play, they love dancing to music, reading books and any interactive technology that is available to them.
This year I am working in a small space with 3 other speech providers who see students individually and in groups. We are hoping to upgrade our space to create a safe, organized and fun environment for our students to learn.
My Project
These two shelving units will help my students have greater access to a wide variety of toys and materials by getting them out of storage bins stacked in a corner and covered by a sheet.
We believe in teaching students in a safe, language-rich and organized environment that give students a chance to lead their own play.
The storage units give the opportunity for students to choose from a variety of play materials that are currently unavailable in our speech room due to a lack of furniture.
In our speech room we provide speech/language services to preschoolers with a wide variety of needs, cognitive levels, linguistic levels and goals. It has been challenging to have enough space for the amount of toys/materials required to address all of these differentiated needs. Having these 2 storage units will make a big difference to our students and the speech providers in my room!
