Hello! I am a 9th grade English teacher at one of 4 new "small schools" phasing out an old East New York, Brooklyn high school with a graduation rate of 43%. While we deal with the same underserved and "at risk" community, we do so with all the pros and cons of a small school. On one hand, we are able to provide personal attention and support, on the other, we lack many of the resources taken for granted at an established high school - no computers or technology, no art or music, few books, etc. One important component of English class is independent reading - 15 minutes a day during which students have the opportunity to read any book of their choice and explore their own interests and passions. I am a firm believer that everyone can learn to love literature, it is only a matter of finding that first "just right" book. Since we are lacking an independent reading library and also because I want my students to get excited about their reading material, I am asking for $700 in order to take 50 freshman book shopping at Barnes & Noble. I think this field trip would be a wonderful way to start our year together as a class, and in turn create a library of high-interest books that the students can share and swap all year long. Please help my 9th graders experience the joy of shopping for a book they can't wait to get home and read - it will truly be a first for most.
