My Students

Our game design class has students learning the various skills to become a game designer. Students work in teams, design levels, code, and write professional documents and stories for their game ideas. On any given day, they are learning the skills needed to become a great designer!

My students come from very diverse backgrounds.

Some have everything they could ask for, but most are at or below the poverty level (Over 70% of our school is on free or reduced lunch). However bad this sounds, it does not seem to affect their enthusiasm for learning about video games. Walking into class, they know that they are going to learn about something they are passionate about. It is very rewarding to see the excitement on their faces when they accomplish a goal ( i.e. coding a character to move). It is also interesting to see them fail. My students understand that failure is a part of the process and that it is where they learn the most. Since this is understood from the first day of class, I have seen students take risks and try new things without fear of "being wrong". Seeing students make connections to things they learn in other subjects is rewarding and a great way for them to understand the importance of their other classes to the field of game design.

My Project

Students will use these materials to design games in a much more rapid way. They will be able to design and test their creations seamlessly and on the fly as they are creating. Students will use this program and the Xbox's for a variety of tasks that we have been unable to cover in the past. Not only will they be able to code, but they will also be able to design levels using the level creation tools. They will also be able to create cut scenes and a story for their game using motion capture and coding. Another key aspect will be the ability to share their games with the Xbox community for feedback and ratings on their creations. This is the most comprehensive program that I have found for quickly developing games for teaching the basic concepts of game design.

Your donations to our project will help improve our classes in a drastic way.

This class reaches almost half of our student population and these materials will be a great asset to our students. Our goal is for students to leave this class with a desire to enter the field of computer sciences. On a broader scale, we are developing problem solvers and critical thinkers through game design, which are skills that are essential for success in the 21st century workplace.
