Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am lucky to teach two awesome classes of students per day in English Language Arts and Social Studies. Between these classes, I see 60 students every day. We are at a high risk, Title I school. Our school has an extremely high English as a Second Language population and acquiring language and writing skills are critical to their success. I truly believe my students can conquer the world given the right tools.
As a class, my kids have shown tremendous growth in reading this year.
I know they have the tools to be successful students and global citizens. I am determined to do everything I can to ensure their success.
My Project
I serve a population that includes a high percentage of English Language Learners. By providing my students with Kindle Fire tablets and headphones, we can access a whole new world of reading. Programs like Epic! Books offer a wide variety of high-interest picture books and audiobooks, and apps like Overdrive will give additional access through the local public library. They will also offer my students who need additional support access to apps and games that support their intervention needs.
My students are capable of anything, given they have the tools and opportunity.
Giving children ample access to all areas of literacy development will help us close the gap.
