This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 1st Grade in an urban community in South Austin at an economically disadvantaged school. My students, despite any personal challenges they may have, have become dedicated and passionate learners. They have developed responsibility and discipline this year as well as pride and confidence in their abilities.

My students' greatest accomplishment and passion are reading!

They have developed their own unique interests and want to continue to explore them. I want to support their love of reading and interests by providing access to books in an organized classroom library.

My Project

My students have learned so much about different kinds of texts this year. They have learned about numerous genres, how to identify the author's purpose, and how to make connections from books to their real lives. My students have developed their own individual passions and often ask me where the _______ book is in the library. Being able to have the resources to organize and label the class library will be so helpful to students and me. The quality of the current book baskets are not great and many have broken sides. My students deserve to have a functional classroom library.

The goal is for students to be leaders of their own learning by creating choice and independence.

With a more organized library, students will be able to seek out their own interests and return books where they belong for others to enjoy.
