Our library's biography section does not see much traffic or circulate many books. The main reason for this is due to the use of traditional shelving of materials in alphabetical order by the famous individual's last name. An effective solution would be to categorize the biography section by the person's key role or job (e.g. inventors, athletes, artists, etc.).
Large book bins would be instrumental in making this project a success.
Each book bin would serve as a container for a category. Signage would be placed on the outside of the bins to alert readers as to the different roles of famous figures while they browse.
This project would be greatly beneficial to our school's students. Making the section more engaging would likely pique student interest and awareness of biographies, which can be great stories that bring inspiration, comfort, and feelings of empathy. Another key goal is to increase student independence and empowerment within this section of the library.
