My Students
"Intellectual curiosity drove Einstein to some of the world's most important discoveries."
First graders are full of curiosity about the world around them. Scholastic Magazines provides the background knowledge to support the hands-on learning we do in class to enrich their understanding.
Our class is a first grade inclusion class in a Title 1 school.
Most of the students are being raised in low social economic homes where books and other reading resources are a luxury most cannot afford. As first graders, they have a strong desire to grow as readers and explore the world through reading, yet most lack the support and resources needed to develop a strong reading vocabulary and build fluency as readers. It is often difficult to develop their background knowledge in history and science, as well as keep them current on world news, because of little to no access to nonfiction materials. It is important to develop this background knowledge, vocabulary and nonfiction comprehension skill set, so they will be strong readers and problem solvers in the future.
My Project
In first grade, we do a lot of exploration in science and social studies. This includes experiments, hands-on discovery, crafts, manipulatives and visual aids. Since our students lack life experience and background knowledge, Scholastic Magazines would give them a great support tool, right at their fingertips. Scholastic always includes relevant articles with vibrant pictures, captions, graphs and other nonfiction tools that engage our students at their reading level. It helps to motivate them to read about topics that are typically more challenging and gives them a sense of ownership in their learning they do not get simply from a teacher sharing of nonfiction text. Scholastic also includes virtual components with online field trips and other engaging tools to further increase the learning experience for students.
Scholastic News and Science Spin magazines provide my beginning readers with a sense of accomplishment and empowerment in challenging topics of nonfiction reading.
These resources support my efforts in teaching students to solve problems through experimentation and exploration by providing necessary background knowledge in science and social studies concepts. They are such a vital tool to help satisfy my students' curiosity about the world around them.
