My Students
Our early childhood school is now in its 12th year serving the community. In our PreK class that means over 180 students have come and gone from this classroom. Along with that, many other students have called our room home for enrichment classes, after school programs, and summer camp.
Families send their precious children to our class every day, for us to help them take those first steps towards accomplishing great feats.
Our families are working class parents who often work long hours to provide for their children.
Children make this room their home for however long they stay and miss it dearly when they move on. It's something we take pride in, and we hope to continue doing what we love to do and that nurtures their love of learning.
I've been teaching, at my first and current school, for seven years. No matter who enters through that door, they are part of our school family. I hope to provide them with the absolute best education we can offer.
My Project
About 25 years ago, a young kindergarten student who was just learning the English language was partaking in a class birthday party. Every child was given a standard spork package that came with the multi-folded square napkin. The child didn't have many friends and lacked the language skills to converse with his classmates. However, he was skilled with his hands. He took the napkin and carefully tore two circles roughly 3 inches apart and a larger oval below it. He made a ghost mask out of napkin and wanted to show his classmates at his table. The other children laughed and elicited the response he was hoping for. His teacher, Mrs. Johnson called his name, "Andy."
I was so worried that I had disrupted the class and angered my teacher that I quickly crumbled up the napkin mask in shame and tried to hide it.
Scared and unaware of what may happen next, I was shocked to see a smile on my teacher's face. She beckoned me to the front and asked me to show the rest of my class what I had created. She praised me for my creativity. Although I lacked the language to understand what my teacher was saying, I felt proud of my work.
I see a lot of my students in that kindergarten reflection of myself. I want them to feel comfortable and confident in their work. I want them to feel proud of the wonderful things their imagination can conjure up and create with the materials in school. I am requesting picture frames, storage bins, and lights to help display and organize our children's work so they can feel proud of the work they've created and show their parents during family engagement.
