Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students need engaging books they will enjoy. In World History this year, we will incorporate the textbook as a way to push reading, but also include novels as part of the class. These novels will serve as a way to promote literacy and a love of reading.
Reading has been a consistent problem at our school.
For the last two years we have scored a 22% proficiency. That means almost 80% of our students are not at grade level. I taught Reading last year and this year World History in a high poverty inner city high school. Many of these students are in English as a Second Language classes and their primary language is foreign. Since the majority of students immigrated from another country, they struggle with English which makes reading and comprehension more difficult. Additionally, many of my students come to school hungry. I try and offer them healthy snacks that will keep them going throughout the day and focused on school. Our school is a great place but has be bogged down by the reputation of years past. We continue to strive to create a positive atmosphere.
My Project
By infusing both textbook and novels, my students will begin to develop a critical lens for history and reading. The books I have chosen tie in perfectly with different time periods and events of World History. They are mainly historical fiction and come from different continents. These books will allow my students to view history from different perspectives and question the bias of history. We will be analyzing the different perspective and relate them back to our own experiences. I see my students make connections with those around the world. With these books, we will have discussions while also incorporating additional reading or articles.
Also, the snacks I am requesting will help my students who sometimes don't eat all day. These snacks will give them some energy and the ability to focus a little more in school. Lastly, the supplies such as highlighters and colored paper will allow my students to be creative with their assignments.
These donations will engage my students into reading which is something we struggle with.
By engaging them, they will improve in all areas of reading, including fluency and comprehension. I see these books creating a love a reading for my students. Since they are young, a love of reading will carry them all through high school and eventually college. Also, these donations will give my students the ability to be creative and express themselves in ways they haven't before.
