Reading has been a consistent problem at our school. For the last two years we have scored a 22% proficiency. That means almost 80% of our students are not at grade level. I taught Reading last year and this year World History in a high poverty inner city high school. Many of these students are in English as a Second Language classes and their primary language is foreign. Since the majority of students immigrated from another country, they struggle with English which makes reading and comprehension more difficult.
