Help me give my students spare uniform pants and shirts in assorted sizes; supplies for the counseling office, including stress balls and organizers, and a privacy screen so that students meeting with counseling interns can feel comfortable and secure.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our K-8 school is a Title I, high poverty school in Southwest Philadelphia, where 100% of students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Despite a large percentage of students who struggle with food or housing insecurity, family stressors, and exposure to violence and trauma, our students come to school curious, active, playful, and ready to engage. I want our school to be a safe, stable place for them where they can set aside worries and hardships and enjoy the confidence and pride that comes with learning and growth. Every day scholars and staff put courage, creativity, perseverance, and resilience to work to accomplish big things on a shoestring.

My Project
Having a clean, well-fitting uniform can make a big difference in how students carry themselves, how they approach school, and how they interact with others. Our students regularly encounter rips, trips, spills, holes, accidents and mishaps, and if we can't reach a parent right away for a replacement then they miss valuable instructional time waiting. Having a ready supply of uniforms for my K-8 scholars will allow them to get back to learning quickly.
Your donation will also help create an organized, inviting space in the counseling office where scholars come to get emotional support.
The privacy screen will help create an area of the room for students to meet with counseling interns in a comfortable, confidential way while other activities are taking place elsewhere in the room. The bulletin board paper will create a soothing backdrop for posters and visual aids. I will use the locker shelves to repurpose the cubbies in my office into usable storage space for therapeutic games. Finally, students will use the stress balls when they come to my office to de-escalate and need to do something sensory before they can find the words to talk about what's bothering them.
