My students need a projector to be able to see our class notes, videos, and pictures pertaining to Spanish language and cultures.

My Students
Think back to your foreign language class in school: Were you memorizing verb charts and corny dialogs between Juan and María (or Jean and Marie for you francophones) or using language in a communicative, culturally relevant, contextualized way? I want to give my students the latter experience.
There are approximately 330 students enrolled at my small urban high school and, as the only foreign language teacher, every single one of them gets to spend two semesters with me.
I have juniors for Spanish I in the fall and seniors in the spring for Spanish II. What we lack in racial diversity (98% of our students are African American), we certainly make up for in learning diversity. I teach a very wide range students, from those who are intellectually disabled to those who may be considered gifted and talented, often in the same class. Regardless of their abilities, my students achieve at high levels and are eager to learn more. I am very lucky to be at a school where I believe the students truly care about their education. They haven't always had the best teachers, the best facilities or the best materials, but this has not kept them from striving to get the best education possible. They chose to attend our high school and it shows.
My Project
My school only has four working projectors that all 25 teachers have to sign out days in advance and share. I had one of them at the beginning of the year and secretly kept it as long as possible. It revolutionized my classroom! I can project the day's guided notes sheet right on the board and model how to fill it in. Gone are the days of time consuming questions like "Where do I write that? How do you spell biblioteca? I don't know what paper we're looking at!" My students were lost today without the projector they had become so accustomed to. Many of them are visual learners and need colorful pictures to aid their learning. Also, my students are very curious and I love to be able to show them answers to their questions at a moment's notice. Want to know what a native Spanish-speaker sounds like? Watch this video from the Dominican Republic! What do people in Guatemala wear? Here are some pictures I took when I was there for spring break! The visuals make Spanish come alive.
The use of an LCD projector has been the single greatest improvement to my classroom this year and I can't imagine going back to having it part time.
My students this semester have watched more videos, seen more pictures and taken better notes than any of my classes before and I want to continue this trend for the rest of the year. Please support the diverse learning needs of my students by donating to this project!
