This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Two years ago our school started a dual language program and we still need materials for the class. Audio books support literacy development in both English and Spanish. Listening to stories being read is a great model for reading fluently.
I have 25 kindergartners who are eager to learn.
Our school has a 57% poverty rate. My students are a combination of English language speakers and native Spanish language speakers. It is a true melting pot, as my students come from all walks of life, and many different places and countries. In my classroom community, we learn everything in two languages. It's exciting, fun and challenging!
My Project
My students need a collection of Spanish audio books. In their listening center, my students will be able to read along to their new stories, individually or in small groups. While some of my students are fluent in Spanish, others are in the process of learning Spanish for the first time. Audio books model fluent reading and help with comprehension, vocabulary, sequencing, and retelling. By donating these audio books to our classroom, you are giving all of my students the opportunity to enjoy great stories.
Having new audio books for our listening center has many advantages.
Listening centers help kids with their listening skills, foster independence, and can complement the content curriculum. It also enriches their literacy practices, using an audio-visual format. Listening centers are also particularly important for second language learners because they can learn new vocabulary, sounds, rhythms, and intonations in their second language.
