This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are bilingual and come from Spanish-speaking areas. They are fun, quirky, loving, caring, and excited to learn! My class is very active, meaning hands-on learning and extra supports are needed to help them stay focused while learning.
My school district has the second-highest child poverty rate of mid-sized school districts in the country; many of my students face tough home environments.
They come to school with many needs that can get in the way of a normal learning day. My method of teaching is through engagement, social interaction, and hands-on activities to give each child as much agency in their learning as possible! Hands-on and social learning also help develop social-emotional learning skills, making for more mature and capable young adults.
My Project
Teaching in this COVID 19 era has been one of the more challenging years of teaching for teachers around the country. On top of COVID and the extra work and stress due to lack of personnel, a paper shortage, new technology platforms to learn, having to transfer our learning experiences to remote learning at the drop of a hat, and adding enormous responsibilities to our already overflowing plates, my district has initiated new social studies curriculum that is not all bilingual and new science standards for my grade level with no material for my grade level. Teachers do NOT have time to create new material, particularly when there is much more on our plates. Having a gift card for Teachers Pay Teachers is extremely useful to fill in the holes where we do not have student-facing materials given to us.
