This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 5th grade teacher in a dual-immersion Spanish-English program in Sonoma, California. One of the subject areas taught in Spanish is Social Studies, which in 5th grade involves the exploration and colonization of North America. It is always my intent to involve literature, the use of novels, to teach an area of study such as this, as it makes the subject more compelling, alive and comprehensible for the students. While there are many novels available in English that have a Social Studies theme, they are very rare in Spanish original or in translation. One of the few I have found is El Diaro de Pedro, which is written from the point of view of a boy working on board Columbus' ship as they sail towards the Americas. It provides many excellent opportunities to teach about the early voyages of Columbus and other explorers, their encounters with natives and the colonization of the Americas that followed. Additionally, the book provides grade appropriate Spanish language reading material, giving students the opportunity to expand and strengthen their Spanish reading and vocabulary skills. Your donation will help expand my students knowledge and enjoyment of American history, while providing them with excellent practice in Spanish reading.
