Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As part of our dual language program, native Spanish speakers take part in a Spanish Language Arts class to develop their Spanish literacy and reinforce the skills that the learn in English Language Arts. A good Spanish Language Arts class is a key part of building biliteracy in among our students! As a new program, we need to build up our library of literacy supports for our Spanish speakers. This TPT gift card will allow us to purchase materials from teachers of established DL programs to help grow ours.
The Dual Language program serves 50% English Language Learners and 50% Spanish language learners to promote linguistic excellence, cross-cultural understanding, and high academic rigor no matter what language a student speaks at home.
Our school is a Title I school that serves a large body of 1st and second generation Americans, including a great number of recent arrivals to the US. Our Spanish native students are gifted students with a host of academic skills in their home language. In order to allow those skills to continue growing while they learn English, a rigorous Spanish language arts class is a must! Additive bilingual education allows us to celebrate our students' home language literacy and leverage it as a key tool for all language learning -- the skills they learn in SLA transfer easily to their ELA class as well!
