Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is becoming a Spanish Dual Immersion school and each year we add a new grade. Our students are 50% English speaking and 50% Spanish speaking and the majority of them are low income.

These students are flexible, resilient people who love learning in spite of the challenges of schooling during COVID-19.

Virtual learning has been a challenge for most of our families and, as a result, many students are struggling to read in second grade. Nonetheless, the students love school and are thrilled to be back in class, even if it is only two days a week.

My Project

COVID-19 has had a drastic impact on literacy in the K-2 classroom-many of my students started second grade with very low reading skills. The books from this project would be sent home for daily reading practice at home. The books I'm asking for are easy readers so I need a lot of them in so as to be able to send home enough for nightly reading practice.

Many of our students do not have access to literature at home so having actual books to take home on a daily basis goes a long way in teaching reading.

The books sent home are at the students' reading level, giving each student an opportunity to learn at their level.
