Spanish Books for Newcomers

Help me give my students books to read in their native language to encourage reading at home and graphic novels in English to help them learn English with highly engaging reads.

My Students

My school is an urban school in Indianapolis, Indiana and is unique in that we have students from 35 different countries and we have 27 languages spoken by our students and their families. Many of these students are new arrivals to the United States and many are refugees. Others are second-generation immigrants. For many of our students, school is the only consistent part of their lives. Our ESL students comprise approximately 60% of our school population.

The diversity is a wonderful environment to work in and the ESL students are eager to learn to speak, write, read, communicate, and interact in English.

I love how hard my students work and I love how supportive their parents are of their education.

My Project

We just finished our first full week back at school and I have three new students and one returning student that are Spanish speakers that love books but have limited access to books in Spanish.

I want to provide my Spanish speaking students with reading material in their language that they can borrow and read both in class and take home to read in the evenings.

I also want to add more graphic novels to our classroom library so all my students regardless of their reading level have highly engaging books that they can learn English as they read in a fun way.
