Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students from Reno come to us with many talents and background experiences to share with their classmates. We have such a diverse and culturally-rich environment that we want to continue to develop and foster as students advance as readers. Many of our students speak more than one language, but many of the accessible books for our students to share with their families are only in one language. Our goal is to help our growing readers and their families discover books in their home language. Our students are curious, hardworking, and ready for a challenge.
My Project
The other day, a student at my school saw her teacher reading and said, "You're reading? Adults don't read!" This comment was so eye-opening, and it started a wave of reflection at our school of how we can create more reading role models in our school and in the homes of our students. For many students reading is seen as something that students have to do because their teacher or parents tell them to do it, rather than something that is pleasurable. By building a community where reading is something that everybody does, students can see more reading role models in their lives.
The students at our school come to us with diverse backgrounds, and many families speak more than one language at home.
In order to help build reading role models, regardless of the language spoken at home, we need to make sure that families have access to books in the language that they speak and read. Your donation will help fund a bilingual library at our school. Families can check books out of our bilingual library to help build more family events around reading.
