This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students enjoy their time in Spanish class, which for many is their first language! They also love to practice their Spanish language skills and to showcase their fluency in a new language!
The students at my school are predominantly Hispanic, Eastern European, African, and African-American.
Eighty percent of my students are considered low-income, thus qualify for the free lunch program. They attend a public school in the third largest district in the country, Chicago. Unfortunately, my school district is underfunded, which affects every school, specifically the extra curricular programs such as Foreign Language. Regardless, my students are amazing! They make the best with what little we have and shine through however with extra supplies we could see much greater gains with their academic growth.
My Project
My school offers Spanish for Spanish language learners for all grades, Pre-K to 8th grade, but we don't have many books or materials for my early childhood students. I have tried my best to supplement the classroom with songs and videos but we don't have books.
My Pre-K - 1st students and I need leveled readers and alphabet books to help us practice and develop speaking skills in our Spanish Language class.
Studies have shown that native like pronunciation is achieved when language learning takes place at a young age. More so, if we wish to jump start their literacy skills in any language: NOW IS THE TIME!
