This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Research shows that the physical environment plays a role in student achievement and behavior and can foster a positive outlook that supports learning, achievement, and social behavior (Fisher & Frey, 2022; NCSSLE, 2024).

I am an art educator at PVHS in Tucson Arizona.

The art studio I teach in used to be a science classroom in its hay day, but has been an art room for 15 years, and is in need of an update.

The Room has very limited storage space. Currently, for student storage, we use small bins that I purchased at the dollar store situated on shelves I constructed out of affordable plywood I purchased from home depot (that bows). This is in lieu of shelves that over the years have been removed and dismantled and thus lost.

The desks they sit at used to be fully functioning drafting tables but have since become shells of their former selves. They no longer function as drafting tables, the wood on them is delaminating and coming detached from the metal frames that hold them. the students then have wobbly and uneven surfaces to work on.

The space you work in and the tools you have access to dictate how you feel about the space you are in and how you create in it. The way the room presents suggests we are struggling, not thriving. And while we do our best, it is time to give this classroom a much needed update! One that will serve students for multiple generations.

We know it is a BIG ASK. But are hopeful, that with your support, we can refresh this space for ongoing success.
