My Project

I teach the most amazing first and second-grade gifted learners! My students are curious, excited to learn, and LOVE a challenge. As gifted learners, many of my students have mastered grade-level standards and enjoy applying their learning to higher-level challenges.

Students will utilize space-themed critical thinking games to promote engagement in mathematical concepts, as well as build fluid reasoning and problem-solving skills--both essential cognitive skills for mathematical reasoning.

Each logic game requires students to think critically in order to solve a challenge, puzzle, or problem. Each game is structured from simple challenges to very difficult challenges, which allows for differentiation to meet the needs of each individual student. Each student will be able to work on a challenge at their own level and progress through challenges as their understanding and confidence grows.

Students will work on logic games in a small group. As students solve challenges, they will explain their mathematical thinking about the challenges to a peer. Students will participate in discourse with each other about the various ways to solve a challenge and justify their reasoning. Then, the challenge will be checked by another student or an adult. Students will track their progress through the challenges with tracking sheets and earn math charms when they complete an entire set of challenges.

Logic games will often feel difficult for students. The goal is for students to engage in a productive struggle as they persevere through the challenges and expand their critical thinking skills. We will connect the productive struggle students experience during the logic games to our growth mindset learning.
