Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It's often said that as we grow older, we begin to get less curious. My students defy this. As the school year goes on, they get more curious as they make connections between concepts and start looking at the world in new ways.

My students are curious and creative problem solvers who make insightful observations as they engage with and learn from each other.

I teach at a Title I school with a diverse population of students who show me every day that, if given the chance, they will rise to the occasion.

My Project

If I've learned one thing as a science teacher it's that students love hands-on activities where they get to be creative and build things. Every year STEM Challenges are one of the most popular things we do, with students eagerly collaborating to design, build, and test their prototypes.

This year I want to create a Space Club on campus so students can learn about space while completing engineering challenges such as building straw rockets, making Mars landers, designing rubber band rovers, and more.

With the donated supplies, we will be able to form a Space Club on campus and participate in Mission to Mars, a national program made up of Space Clubs from all around the country. Each week, students will learn about a different Mars-related topic and complete a related engineering challenge. For example, with the syringes and tubing kit, students will learn about how NASA collects soil samples on other planets and then create a pneumatic sampling device that is capable of picking up a ping pong ball. Students will also have the chance to view weekly career chats featuring STEM professionals and even win prizes.

Aside from learning about space and being given the opportunity to complete STEM challenges, this club will also help build both community and a love of science on our campus by creating a space for space-loving students to come together.
