Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This compassion project will help my Pre-K students develop the social-emotional skills to recognize others’ feelings, understand different perspectives, and take kind, thoughtful actions to support their peers. My students come from low-income, Spanish-speaking, immigrant families.
Many are familiar with struggle, making it essential that they learn how to process their own emotions and respond with empathy to the experiences of others.
Students will learn to see the world through the eyes of another person using bilingual books, diverse dolls, role-play costumes, and storytelling prompts that reflect real-life situations. Daily discussions and imaginative play will invite them to step into someone else’s world and ask, “How are they feeling?” and “What can I do to help?”
To work toward alleviating others’ suffering, students will participate in weekly “kindness missions,” use calming visuals and plush toys in a dedicated Compassion Corner, and practice comforting language in both Spanish and English.
To measure success, I will document compassionate moments using a classroom Canon camera. These photos will be used for student reflection, a visual classroom mural, and shared celebrations of growth with families. I will also track emotional vocabulary growth, peer interactions, and observable kind behaviors over time.
This project will nurture a classroom culture rooted in empathy, emotional intelligence, and connection skills that will serve my students far beyond the classroom.
