This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

High School of Language and Innovation is a Title I, high poverty, urban, public high school in the North Bronx, where 99% of students receive free or reduced price lunch. Due to the diverse student body residing in a cosmopolitan Bronx neighborhood, I teach a world music percussion curriculum that introduces students to various cultures as a means of fostering student understanding and appreciation. A significant portion of my curriculum focuses upon different musical cultures from around the globe. All students involved with the percussion program learn to play different percussion instruments while performing percussion music from West Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America. The percussion ensemble is student-led, where we collectively choose different student music to perform from Ghanaian Gahu to Brazilian Samba to Dominican Bachata. Our students typically come from low-income households in high poverty neighborhoods in the Bronx. The students at this high school attend a Title I school (99% of students participate in the free lunch program). The recent development of the percussion program has increased student attendance and increased student grades and scholastic participation.

My Project

All students involved with HSLI percussion program learn to play different percussion instruments while performing percussion music from West Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America. We have many students from Indian and Bangladesh. We are looking to incorporate Indian percussion traditions into the curriculum. The Indian percussion workshop led by Sameer Gupta would help students to master some basic Indian percussion rhythms on drums. Our 60 student Afro-Latin percussion ensemble has been accepted to perform at the Johnny Pacheco Latin Jazz festival in the late fall. We perform 7-8 public concerts a year. All students in the percussion program learn to drum. The percussion ensemble is student-led. Our students typically come from low-income households in high poverty neighborhoods in the Bronx and thus we do not have a strong PTA donor base. We are seeking to have a professional Ghanaian drummer work with our percussion students this year.
