This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students face huge challenges. We are in the poorest congressional district in the USA in the South Bronx. Yet, our students still thrive here! They are predominately from low income households and most receive help from the government. We are in a high crime area. Still, our students are dedicated, show up, and are ready to learn. We far exceed the city's graduation rate! This is how much grit and desire our students have to be the best they can be.

My Project

Many of our students live in shelters and come from broken homes. They have witnessed things that have caused deep trauma and wounds. Often these students are labeled behavior problems. However, they are not. They simply need simple ways to release tension while in the classroom. Using stress balls and fidget spinners, students can release tension and stay on task instead of being sent out of the classroom and creating a vicious cycle. With the stress balls, we give the student a chance to bring their tension down and stay focused on the class they are in. It gives them a chance to self regulate.
