Hanna and Nate are my Sousaphones. Nate is an All NW level tuba player and Hanna has passion for performing as well. These students have been dealing with instruments that are over 40 years old and literally falling apart. They both want to play but only one of our instruments works at this time.
Our students love music and they love to perform. They bring that passion to this project. They both want to be able to perform on one of the most visible instruments in the band and help to fill out our bass sound. Our current instruments are falling apart, making strange noises (not from the kids), and are unreliable. Kids deserve to play on an instrument that is in working order.
Music is the glue for everything in the brain. Our students are a part of an organization that will teach them skills for college, career, life, and beyond. Dedication, hard work, practice, teamwork, collaboration, competition, school spirit, musicality, and community service. There are not just one or two skills that are covered in a performing school ensemble. Our tubas are sharing their experience with other organizations in our school as well. Hanna just returned from FFA National Convention, and Nathan represented our school at the All Northwest Music Conference last Winter.
In Their Own Words
We would like to get help to purchase a new sousaphone and begin to replace our old sousaphones that are broken down and not always in working order. We want support from the local and online community to be able to help make this happen.
With my teacher's help we would fund raise and help to get the word out about this project so we could get a new sousaphone. This is something that is important to us, and supports the band, and we want it to be a positive thing.
Having a new sousaphone would help show pride in our school because it is the biggest and most noticed instrument. Not having an instrument that is in good condition makes the band and the school look bad. The band plays at a lot of events and represents our town in many locations and would be well viewed.
P.S. Having a sousaphone that doesn't rattle or squeak and have parts missing or that is turning yellow from age would also be helpful and safer.
