I am a third grade teacher at Washington Irving School in Chicago, IL where approximately 85% of our children are on free or reduced lunch. I am fortunate to teach in a city that has so many cultural resources. I plan many field trips that are either free or have a very nominal cost. Last year the Chicago Symphony had to cancel its children's program because of financial restraints. This year, thankfully, they are back again with their Very Special Promenades Concerts. Noah's Flood (Noye's Fludde) is the performance I would like the children to see. This concert is the amazing tale of many animals sharing one ship with Noah and his family and how they celebrate the end of the flood. The orchestra will also be using found “Instruments" and playing them as musical instruments. For example, china mugs struck with wooden spoons to represent rain drops. What fun! And what a great idea for when we get back to school and have our own version of this concert!! Sadly, they have had to raise the cost of the seats which will put a strain on the budget of many of my parents. Irving school has a music program in place from first through eighth grade. We have a concert band which starts in fourth grade. Every year our band has won an outstanding award from the city competition. I feel that by exposing the children to the beauty of classical music and the awe of being at the Chicago Symphony Hall, they will gain an appreciation and respect for this type of music. The symphony also sends a docent to the school and a CD of the performance beforehand so that this is truly a fabulous experience for my children.
