Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students come from families that battle with the struggles of poverty, trauma, living in the shelter system or projects. My students are predominantly Hispanic or black. In addition to their personal struggles outside of school, each of my students has a learning disability and has had many failures in their short educational careers before entering my classroom.

In a diverse community, resources are often limited and teachers must dip in their own pockets to ensure students receive a high quality education they are entitled too.

The vast majority of students in the school qualify for free and reduced lunch.

This year, I want to embark in new territory. My students are struggling readers! Even with various levels of intervention they are still struggling. I believe creating a sound wall will help my students become better readers and writers.

My Project

I have watched my special education students year after year struggle to become avid readers and writers. It is not due to lack of effort. Instead something with the way that I am teaching reading, phonics, and the use of the English language just isn't working. I have paid for various intervention trainings which has helped some but there is still a subpopulation each year that make little to no progress.

I believe making a sound wall in my classroom will finally help my student's make sense of language in a more explicit and systematic way.

That the sound wall will become the tool that serves as a gateway for my struggling learners to finally take ownership of their reading and blossom. I am inspired by the research and the thought of finally getting my struggling readers to think, organize and be able to find the sounds and letters to be successful readers and writers is exciting!
