I am a teacher of special needs students for first grade in a low-income/high poverty Title I school in Delaware. My students are faced with many challenges on a daily basis in and out of school. They come to school to work hard in an environment that embraces their learning challenges and helps them succeed.
Throughout the day, I teach my students to become independent thinkers who will do the right thing in challenging situations and persevere through difficulties.
My students support one another creating a inviting learning community where they feel comfortable taking risks.
My Project
First grade is a time when young readers learn to explore letters and their sounds at deeper level and really begin to read. Throughout the past year our students have received phonics instruction while wearing masks which has made reading instruction challenging as it has been hard for them to see and hear the articulation of sounds/phonemes. I teach students from each of our first grade classrooms. In order to teach all first grade students to read and be able to effectively and efficiently decode, we as a grade level all want to use Sound Walls.
A Sound Wall supports students by focusing on the articulation of sounds/phonemes and the various letter/letter patterns that represent the sounds/phonemes in words.
This is important because when we hear language, we hear words as whole units. A sound wall does the work of matching our articulation of speech sounds/phonemes to the letters/graphemes that represent those sounds.
My project is for Sound Wall kits for each of our first grade classrooms; including my special education pullout room. These kits include Phoneme/Grapheme Cards, Phoneme/Grapheme Wall Posters, and the Consonant Chart & Vowel Valley Posters.
