Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The systematic, explicit, and sequential instruction of foundational skills is essential in developing fluent readers and writers. My students, K-2nd grade, are learning to count syllables in words, segment sounds, read high frequency words, blend sounds, spell simple words, and read words, phrases, sentences, and decodable books.
Amazing students deserve amazing learning opportunities and they need the appropriate materials to thrive and become fluent readers and writers.
All of my students are below grade level and therefore receive small group instruction five days a week for thirty minutes a day. My goal is to provide students with the necessary skills to become a successful reader and writer.
My Project
According to the Science of Reading, students become skillful readers if they have decoding and language comprehension in place. Students will be able to decode words as they learn letter sounds and then be able to blend those sounds in words.
Sound walls are created as students receive explicit, systematic, and sequential phonics instruction.
Students must explicitly be taught letter names and sound in order to decode words. The articulation of sounds, which is the correct placement of teeth, tongue and lips when producing sounds, provide students with the scaffold needed as they learn letter sounds. The Tool4Reading sound wall picture cards/visuals will be introduced and used throughout the school year. The visuals will be displayed for students to refer to and use as they learn how to read and write. The sound wall folders will provide students with a tool to use and refer to at home as they read and write. The phoneme/grapheme strips will be placed on student desks to refer to as they work independently on reading and writing.
