Help me give my students yoga mats, singing bowls, and visuals to help them learn the health & wellness benefits of sound healing, yoga, and mindful breathing.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
As a school counselor for over 20 years, I work with students of many ages (4-13 years) with a variety of abilities and disabilities, including autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, and physical and emotional disabilities. Many of them struggle with trauma that interferes with self-regulation and the use of effective coping strategies, which significantly interferes with educational performance and socialization.
Many of my students are from minority backgrounds, live in poverty, and lack access to mental health and wellness activities to aid in the development of the whole child.
Access to complementary alternative medicine and non-traditional healing modalities is limited and typically not covered by most insurance companies.
Many of them also live in neighborhoods where access to safe parks and play areas is limited or non-existent, further reducing their ability to achieve regular movement outside of school, which is imperative for all of us, but most important for growing and developing bodies and minds.
Introducing my students to techniques that will benefit both their physical and mental health and wellness, that they can utilize and access throughout their lives, without the need for costly physical tools or the need for large space will contribute to the development of the whole child. Sound therapy and yoga are both scientifically supported modalities that enhance mood, focus, and stress, boost brainwaves, and are a great emotional and physical release.
