My Students

My students are suffering due to the double pandemic - COVID and racism. They are a majority minority with less than 1% of our students identifying as non-minority. The students are caregivers to their siblings, teen parents, English Language Learners, working to help their family, and attending school. With all of these pressures, they still get up and jump online to attend class and get help with their work. In our building, we believe having access to supplies that we need when we need them is an easy way to boost student engagement. Since we are an alternative school, our sports program gets very little funding. This means that we have to sometimes wait to get access to the gym, basketballs, and locker rooms. They enjoy the energy that sports creates and it does help them build confidence, creates community, and supports their academic progress towards graduation. Due to the pandemic, all of that has changed and we are finding creative ways to connect with them.

My Project

In an effort to motivate students and celebrate their successes more frequently, we have created a sound on space for them to listen to music and watch movies. This project will give us and the students flexiblity in how and where they can listen. The wireless ear buds would be an incentive for two students who show the most gains over the next three to four months. The speaker would allow them to take the music outside in our courtyard to listen freely without interrupting other students. Additionally, our room has an outside space where students can dance, eat, and have a really good time after getting work done. The Sound On space is student monitored and managed so we can build leadership skills.
