Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds and have a myriad of needs. Most qualify for free lunch and live below the poverty line. Many have single parents that work multiple jobs, and my students either watch younger siblings or work after school to help pay the rent. Because of this, participating in private musical instruction or outside performance group has not been an option. However, they are very creative and eager to learn. They desire to participate in extracurricular performance opportunities like our annual talent show or drama club; however, we do not have a functional auditorium PA system or necessary sound equipment to successfully mount large scale performances.

For the majority of my students, the first time they ever perform on stage is during their high school career.

But they are no stranger to music. They bring with them the different styles and sounds of their home countries, rich histories and cultures, languages, memories, passion, dedication and excitement.

Many have moved to this country with the hope of finding a new and better life filled with opportunity. My hope is to give every student the opportunity to succeed in music and performance.

My Project

The materials requested in this project will benefit all 875 students in our student body. The microphones are designed to pick up sound from a distance, while suspended overhead. This will be beneficial for all of our school functions such as pep rallies, school assemblies, talent shows, choral and band concerts, drama club productions, musical productions, as well as any outside performing groups that the school brings in.

This one simple tool can improve the quality of education for every member of our school community, as every student will be directly impacted by the use of these microphones for school assemblies and events.

Students in our News and Media club will be trained on the use of the sound equipment as a precursor to media production. Our choral and band program will receive the benefit of high quality equipment for the sound system that is comparable to that of a professional theatre. We do not currently have sound equipment of this caliber and often struggle with poor sound quality, feedback and inconsistent mixing. We struggle with our sound each and every performance, and it will be nice to have a high quality, reliable piece of equipment.

Our school is not currently capable of purchasing this equipment, so we rely on generous contributions from donors like you to help our program continue to grow!
