My students need general supplies to start the year out on the right foot and make sure that we stay on track throughout the year in our health and academics.
“One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world.” This quote comes from Children's, Human Rights and Education activist Malala Yousafzai but ask yourself: What becomes of those children without one pen? One book?
My students are exuberant, brilliant, funny, and inquisitive.
They are also the burdened by adverse childhood experiences, poverty, crumbling infrastructure, and the ever dwindling education funding by our state government. Our school is a racially diverse urban Title I Performing Arts school in which 93% of our student body is economically disadvantaged. For many of our students and their families that simple paper list of "School Supplies" (not to mention basic enrollment fees) presents a financial hardship that necessitates sacrifices in other expenses such as back-to-school clothes, new shoes, or, in worst case scenarios even family meals.
Beyond the statistics and clinical assessment of our school, we are a family, a bastion of hope, builders of resilience, a second home, a community resource, a support system, and so much more. Our students live their hopes and dreams to be doctors, lawyers, nurses, veterinarians, politicians, dancers, professional athletes, and so much more.
My Project
The resources I am requesting for my classroom are essential classroom basics. Of course, they’re called essentials for a reason. I am requesting composition books for my students to use as interactive notebooks and to record their reflections on each week’s lessons, dry erase markers to allow us to analyze the components of good writing, hand sanitizer to keep us healthy and clean, hand lotion to keep our hands soft and smooth, tissues for times when we are sick, and (what will hopefully be) a year’s supply of pencils.
These supplies will allow us to approach learning in a hands-on, interactive way that lends itself to an appreciation of reading, writing, and exploring the world around us in a safe, healthy, nurturing environment.
Having access to these supplies will lessen the financial burden on families in our community, allow students equitable access to coursework and learning opportunities, help our students to feel supported and loved, and ensure them that the world outside of their own community is invested in their education and success.
Your donation to this project will help my students start the school year with their best foot forward and truly give them the keys to the Kingdom of Success.
