Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second grade teacher in a low-income public school in Bronx, NY. I have been lucky enough to have a motivated group this year, and I am very proud of the strides they have made in reading. I have a tried with some success to set up a leveled library for them, but some of my students are reading at a higher level. Sadly, I do not have enough books for them to read past their current level. On the other end, I have some struggling readers that read at low levels and I have few books for them to choose.
I want my students to succeed in reading, but they need more books. The resources provided at my school are not adequate enough to meet their needs. My higher-level readers have resorted to reading lower-level books and my lower functioning readers are reading books above their reading level.
All students deserve to have appropriate books that help them to become confident readers and confident writers. I want to provide this for my students, but I don't have nearly enough books in my library to enable them to enjoy and develop their reading skills from their current level. I do not want them to be discouraged and frustrated with books that they cannot read or with books that are too simple for them.
Reading is essential to life and academic success. My students need more books to help them to become life-long readers and learners. A set of "just right" books could really help my students with their overall reading and academic success.
Thank you for your consideration.
