About My Students
My 7th grade student, Luca, came to me last month very upset about his instrument case. He proudly plays one of the largest instruments in our band; the baritone saxophone. This instrument plays a vital role in our ensembles. It provides our bass line along with the tuba.
Luca was upset that when he went to put his instrument back in its appropriate place in the closet, he lifted it and it almost fell out of the case. All the locks were locked and he was holding it correctly by the handle, but the case has taken such a beating over the many years we've had it, that the walls of the case are no longer locked together and the case opens whenever it likes. After letting him know that this incident was not his fault he asked if we could purchase new instrument cases so that it didn't happen again. I said that I would look into it. Well, after doing my research I learned that these items are well out of our budget. After reporting back to Luca my sad news, he asked if I thought that we could post a project on DonorsChoose.org I told him one better, HE could post a project on DonorsChoose.org! His face lit up with excitement and he began his proposal right then and there.
My students will learn how to take ownership over a problem and develop a solution. Even though the school is unable to make the purchase, Luca made sure to look for another solution to get the materials he needs for his instrument. He and the two other baritone saxophone players have already begun to type a letter that they want to send to local businesses asking for donations to the proposal. They are determined to end the year with new cases for their instruments.
In Their Own Words
We are trying to raise money in order to buy 3 new baritone sax cases. We need these cases because the cases we have are all torn up, and the locks do not work. The cases that we found as replacements are hard shell cases that protect the instrument inside and also have wheels for easy transportation. We participate in two competitions each year and for one of them we travel to Pennsylvania. These cases will help guarantee safe transport for our bari saxes.
The other baritone sax players and I are going to write letters to our local businesses explaining the problem we have; not enough money to replace our broken cases. I hope to encourage them to donate to the proposal. We are also going to prepare an email to our parents, friends, and graduates of the school also. I really hope we are able to get these cases before we leave for our competition in May. I don't know if the cases we have would keep the instruments safe on the bus trip.
This project is important to me, personally, because I love my instrument and take very good care of it. I would also like to have new cases for students in the future who will use this instrument. Since my teacher is trusting us enough to borrow school instruments, I would like to repay her by helping to get new cases because these are so broken. The school has a great reputation for its music ensembles, band and chorus, and I want to keep the future of this school band very strong.
