My Students

My students have grit. They come from a variety of homes: from safe and loving two-parent households to foster, homeless, and mosaic families struggling through the opioid crisis. My students are always singing. They love. They emote. They sing, dance, and play with incredible passion.

The parents who are involved, insist on excellent behavior and do not coddle the children.

There are no entitled kids here. Respect, responsibility, and safety for all are the values of our school. Everyone: the principal, the teachers, and the students, live it.

My Project

More than three-quarters of my students are from underprivileged households. More than one-third are learning English.

In our disposable culture, it's rare for children to learn respect and care for one another by respecting materials that can be used for generations.

In my three years at HWS, my students have learned to take care of the instruments!

Now we need to increase the quality and quantity of our ensemble by expanding the number of instruments we have with top-of-the-line instruments. This soprano metallophone is a solo instrument. With it, students learn jazz improvisation in a solo voice. My vision for the year is to facilitate student composition. This will help.
