My Project
My goal is to acquire a classroom set of Oedipus Rex by Sophocles. This set will help to introduce my students to the Classics and the ancient world. This timeless classic will help my students build a foundation of historical and literary knowledge from which they will analyze and compare tragedy from the ancient world to tragedy from the Christian world to tragedy from our age of technology and modernity.
This text will serve my classroom as a tool to explore the ancient Greek world from the genealogy of the Greek gods to the theater of the Athenian dramatists of the 5th century BCE.
Oedipus, a man of modernity who sets out to end a pandemic plaguing Thebes, discovers the truth of his own identity in the process. Through exploring this classic, my students will explore the play's portrayal of fate, freewill, self-fulfilling prophecy, truth, ignorance, knowledge, blindness, guilt, shame, violence, social exclusion, wisdom, pride, humility, identity, and pandemic.
Many of my students come from financially struggling communities, yet most of my students love most the Greeks. With your support, you can help these students engage with material that truly interests them.
