This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"When I look back, I am so impressed again with the life-giving power of literature. If I were a young person today, trying to gain a sense of myself in the world, I would do that again by reading, just as I did when I was young." ~ Maya Angelou ~ "These children need to gain a sense of themselves."
I am a fourth-grade teacher who teaches an inclusion class where special and general education children learn together.
My students come from economically disadvantaged homes, to a school where money is scarce. But that does not stop the children from being motivated to learn and eager to read. The population of my class is very diverse, ranging from English Language Learners to proficient readers. The district does not have the means to provide a classroom library to us. The public library is not any better. There is no money available in the homes for things other than food. So, bringing books to the children in the classroom will satisfy the needs and the urge that they have to read.
My Project
In our class, we hope to form sophisticated readers who will create their own identities through reading. We want to implement the rigorous and responsive "Readers' Workshop" from the Teachers College at Columbia University. In this effort to bring quality education to the children, we need to utilize specific touchstone texts to teach the children essential skills needed to read independently. These texts, proposed by the "Teachers College Reading and Writing Project," are complex enough to challenge children and help them learn to tackle texts independently. These texts may seem boring, but in fact they are filled with information. This project will teach children how to read well and will also teach them how to love reading. Each child will need a copy of the text in order to follow the lesson and enjoy the selection to the fullest. My project is divided into different proposals, hoping that we will get all of them funded, so that each child receives their own copy of the books.
I am asking that you help me get these books for the children.
With your support, the children will have books that will make them become sophisticated readers equipped "with the life-giving power of literature." Reading is my students way out of their cruel reality. Help me bring to them the knowledge that they need so they can rise up in this society where life is already hard. Please, help!
