Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We have a group of 16 pre-kindergarten students who are at such a young, vulnerable and inspiring age. This wonderful group of students consists of general education students, students with disabilities and students with native languages other than English. In our inclusion classroom, students come to school daily to play and work together to learn how to become good friends and brilliant learners.

Our elementary school is a Title I school with majority low-income students in central Austin.

Our students are socially, racially, and economically diverse. Almost 20% of our students are receiving special education services. Each of our students loves coming to school every day because school gives them the opportunity to communicate, grow and learn in a secure and loving environment. We are determined to make our classroom the most inviting and enjoyable space possible so that students can grow with a love for learning.

My Project

Sensory input is something all our of students need throughout various parts of the school day. Using the fidgets, hoberman sphere, cuddly puppy weighted lap pad and calming cuddle ball in our 'safe place' will give students the opportunity to self-regulate and understand their emotions. By using kinetic sand and tools, students will be able to use their imagination and develop oral language to play together. Students will also be able to build communication, fine motor and social emotional skills when exploring with friends in the sand and water table.

Sensory play provides our students with fine motor development and fosters creativity opportunities during play.

By adding sensory materials to our learning centers we can provide more opportunities for our students to explore different textures, sounds and surfaces. These materials will be used in a variety of learning centers throughout the year to help develop and explore sensory input.
