I know everyone says that THEIR students are the most talented and creative, but that's because they haven't met my students yet. The choir and A Cappella program is a diverse group of students that perform all over the community. Although about 70% of our student population is low SES and many students have limited resources, especially when it comes to technology, their drive for experience and knowledge is unmatched.
My students are poets and singers, dreamers and rappers, doodlers and beatboxers, actors and leaders.
They utilize every opportunity to grow as performers, and in the process, learn the necessary skills to grow into mature, young adults.
My Project
Our school has top tier music ensemble classes including band, choir, and orchestra. However, there are not many outlets for the musicians in the building that enjoy making music on their own.
That's why I created a song-writing class.
This song-writing class is a place for students to learn how to write their own songs, create their own beats, record, mix, and produce their tracks, and ultimately share their creativity with the rest of the world. There are so many musicians in our schools that are not being given the opportunity to create music in school because they do not wish to be a part of an ensemble. However, they still deserve the right to study and create music.
This song-writing class will cover a broad spectrum of song-writing skills. Ukuleles are easy instruments to learn, and it will be a platform through which I can teach chord progressions, rhythms, and accompaniment skills. It will provide an avenue through which students can accompany themselves and further their song-writing experiences.
