Song of Solomon Books for Inner City AP Students

Help me give my students copies of Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison to read and analyze for their AP English Literature course.

My Project

I am taking over the AP English Literature course at my school next year, and the novels and plays available for my students to read and study do not enable them to examine the diverse voices and viewpoints essential for success on the AP exam in May.

I am hoping to add in diverse and important writers like Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winning writer Toni Morrison to allow for more analysis of college level texts within the class.

Morrison's novel, Song of Solomon, is a novel that will enable my students to write strong essays for the open question on the AP Exam. The open question asks them to write about a novel they know well, and the prompts for this essay require them to write about a book with complexity within its themes and writing. This novel has many sophisticated themes and ideas, making it an ideal choice for an AP level literature class.

My school is an inner city creative and performing arts high school. The students come from neighborhoods all across the city. I currently teach books by writers like William Shakespeare, George Orwell, and J.D. Salinger. In addition to these men, I would like to add in Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison to ensure that we are hearing from different voices so we can examine as many different themes and ideas as possible. The more wide ranging the literature my students study, them more they learn about all the possible ways a writer can write and convey ideas.
