Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We have been experimenting with a Reader's Workshop program, and I have already seen dramatic changes in my students' attitudes toward reading. We need an area rug so that my students have somewhere to sit or lay during our reading block.
My school is in an industrial and impoverished area of the city.
All of my students are learning English as their second language. The majority do not have any books at home. There is nowhere to check out books nearby because the local library is being remodeled. Our school library has not been updated in years because of budgetary constraints.
My Project
My students will use the area rug during their reading time. Sitting on a desk to read a book is not comfortable. I want my students to enjoy their books and have a clean, comfortable space to either sit, or lay on while they read. The rug will help them concentrate because they will be in a comfortable spot during reading time.
Most of my students entered this school year reading below grade level.
Having a place where they can sit or lay while reading will be comfortable, and will allow them to concentrate better while reading. Sitting on a chair all day is not fun. Having a soft place to sit while reading will help my students concentrate and it will allow them to enjoy their books.
