My students need a document camera in order to have full access to view a demonstration as well as a wider range of images from print media.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"The power of art is its ability to shake us into revelation and rip us from our default mode of seeing." Simon Schama's statement works provided you can actually SEE the art--in print or as it is being created. A document camera is a powerful teaching tool my high school students desperately need
My collection of 150+ lively, vibrant, fascinating youths are only too aware of Stockton's negative press.
Just recently moved from number one to the fifth most dangerous city in America, Stockton is also ranked as the least literate city in the US with a population of over 250,000. When asked to list their favorite thing about Stockton, only a tiny fraction found anything positive to say. Yet, they are fiercely supportive of their family and the rich mixture of cultures in our student body (primarily Latino, Asian and African American). Many have developed their talent in art despite limited exposure outside their neighborhood to Stockton's exceptional cultural venues. Watching my students respond creatively through visual art is both touching and satisfying.
My Project
My art class is a bridge to the world for Stockton's inner-city high school youth--a bridge that could expand opportunities for students who may struggle academically but thrive in a setting that taps their creativity. A series of budget cuts in these students' short lives have limited their exposure to art making and the wealth of visual media available to students living in more privileged areas. I used a doc camera to teach art in another school and am all too aware of the tremendous impact on learning when kids can watch a demonstration (especially by another student) and view a close-up of a work of art as a class. These students are eager to learn and fascinated watching videos and Cd's with the technology we have, but nothing beats the immediacy of a real-time demonstration--that you can SEE.
An amazing potential fueled by a desire to express ideas and perspectives is sparked and comes alive through the arts.
My classes of 30+ students sit quietly and pay attention in school for a demonstration with limited visual access. Imagine the impact if they could easily see what to do?! In speaking about the power of art,Mr. Schama also said, "We get fitted with new sight:in-sight...we can never be the same again." We need the "in-sight" made possible by a doc cam!
