I would love to give my students a safe and comfortable space in my classroom where they can take a break and destress, so they can learn to regulate their emotions. My students will utilize this space to take a break when they are feeling overwhelmed. There will be comfy chairs, a rug, lap desks, and coloring materials that will help them decompress and think about their next step. It will help them self regulate so their behavior does not escalate.
A calming corner will teach my students how to recognize and advocate for themselves when they need a break.
A lot of times we feel overwhelmed as adults and need to take a break in order to move on or get past difficult emotions. If we feel this way, it is obvious that children can get to this point too, but there is a big difference. Children do not have the tools or the space to take that much needed break. When they feel ready, they can rejoin the class, and be motivated to succeed.
