Our students come to school every day (with 98.4% attendance) in a diverse, low-income, urban community. They are 68% Asian, 14% African-American, 11% Latino, 6% Caucasian and 1% multiracial.
Our school community supports the whole student academically, physically and emotionally.
By meeting the needs of our students on many levels, we help them to find success in school and in their community. It is a collective effort to help each of our students become the best people they can be. We try to create a foundation that they will take with them through their education and beyond.
My Project
Each week, the four classrooms of 7th and 8th graders I am lucky enough to work with, sit in a circle and share Roses and Thorns. We reflect on our week and share something good (a rose) and something challenging (a thorn) from the past week. I find that while some students embrace this activity, other students stick with very superficial moments ("it's almost the weekend" or "I had a test"). If they had the means to tap into their emotions, they might be more willing to talk.
Kimochis are miniature plushes that provide great visual and tactile reminders of so many possible emotions just waiting to be acknowledged or embraced by my middle schoolers.
Very often, teens have feelings that they just aren't sure how to label. Kimochis have a wide range of different emotions written on their backs, with corresponding facial expressions on their little faces. This connection between face and feeling can help my students express their emotions and I hope they will ultimately open up more as a community.
