Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an urban public high school. Along with the usual teenage interests, our students have a unique perspective on music and art, as they are growing up near creative centers in beach cities and Hollywood. Many of our students study piano outside of school, so providing support is an important part of encouraging students' extracurricular pursuits.

Developing individual interests, choosing music of personal interest to study, and joining together to play music with and for friends are important steps in developing a lifelong enriching music hobby.

Classes and adult-organized activities are an integral component of education, but student-organized activities are also crucial. When we are allowed and encouraged to develop our own creative approaches to developing ourselves, we learn in different ways and think about our educations differently.

My Project

Most days during the morning nutrition break and at lunch time, students come to the classroom to play music. We have three keyboards, three guitars, and a drum set, and students play together with their friends and alone. We have one bass that needs some repair, and a second bass will make teaching easier (it's difficult to show a beginner a lesson then hand over the instrument for them to try without their being able to watch and hear).

My students need an electric bass, a couple keyboard stands, a guitar stand, and guitar picks for their band practice setup in the classroom.

For some who struggle with academics, finding one part of school they enjoy can help them deal with the rest; the advanced can charge ahead, unfettered from the tendency toward conformity with minimal standards; all realize the hard work required to improve. There are many other good reasons to support students' pursuing their own creative interests. It may be rare for high school students to have the chance to join together with friends and play music in the classroom, but it shouldn't be.
