This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember your first pet? Students at our high poverty school have varied cultural backgrounds and many are English Language Learners. Often students have attended multiple school as early as second and third grade. Many of these students have never experienced the joy of pet ownership.
My students frequently have had inconsistent reading and language arts instruction due to transitory home lives.
They usually have little or no academic support at home due to language barriers. Because many of my students live in apartments, they are unable to own pets. Other students' families are financially unable to care for pets.
My Project
A beautiful aquarium alive with colorful fish and graceful plants is the perfect forum for my students to observe animal behavior firsthand and to develop responsibility by caring for living creatures. It will allow students to experience the joy of bonding with a classroom pet and to witness the ups and down in the circle of life. Just as the movie Furry Vengeance demonstrates, children are naturally compassionate toward animals and I wish to foster that in my classroom.
Aquariums are peaceful and beautiful.
It is just what my students need to be exposed to the wonders of the animal world while developing responsibility for another creature and the pride that comes with it.
