My students need hands-on materials like a dentist puzzle, a Learn to Brush Demonstration Kit, and the CD read-along "Why Do I Lose My Teeth" to learn about good dental health.
How many times have you seen young children who have black spots on their teeth? What will happen as they get older? Will they learn the importance of taking care of their teeth or will they be scared to go to the dentist?
My class is a special needs preschool class located in a high poverty area in North Carolina.
These special children can begin preschool at age 3 and will often stay in my class for two years before moving on to kindergarten. An important part of our program is learning through play, where the teachers act as facilitators in the children's learning. Playing allows the children to experience learning in an environment that is designed to meet their special needs.
My Project
Often, young children, especially those with special needs, are afraid to go to the dentist. They don't understand the importance of taking care of their teeth. The materials requested will enable me to set up a dentist area in our dramatic play area. The children will be able to pretend to go to the dentist and gain a better understanding of what happens in a dentist's office. Additional hands-on materials will give the children the opportunity to learn about the dentist and how to brush their teeth.
Dental Health month is in February.
Wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to teach young children about good dental health and how to brush their teeth so that they wouldn't be afraid to go to the dentist?
